The

Materials Engineer

is responsible for high-level analysis, classification, and categorization of test results and observations to support yield enhancement, product design and reliability engineering. The Materials Engineer uses a combination of tests, fault isolation tools, problem solving techniques, and physical analysis to determine the root cause of a failure. Prepares analyses and reports on portions of larger projects or on individual projects and presents findings and recommendations.

Principal Accountabilities

Serves as metallurgical engineering expert on Laboratory’s Failure Analysis and testing team with working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements for competency in testing.

Review methodologies used in developing reliability predictions and test procedures in order to assess effectiveness.

Keeps abreast of the state of the art in the fields of reliability, maintainability and testing.

Review and evaluate data developed from tests in order to isolate problems in component design, material design, material characteristics and other factors.

Evaluate materials design, manufacturing processes and usage to determine root causes of failures and, based on findings, recommend changes in design, processing and limitation of usage.

Provide technical assistance to Prototyping and Fabrication Laboratory production teams on problems involving chemical composition, forging and heat treatment.

Perform mechanical testing, analyzes and appraises metallurgical aspects relative to malfunctions of vehicles and other weapons systems.

Furnish advice to Modeling, Simulation and Design Laboratory teams on problems requiring design changes which may affect product quality and reliability.

Review weapon system specifications and recommend reliability, maintainability and test specifications to be incorporated into procurement contracts.

Provide technical assistance to contracting officials on matters involving interpretation of specifications and drawings related to requirements of materials.

Evaluate contractors' technical competence.

Provide consulting services to quality assurance elements on matters concerning definition of criticality of cracks, inclusions, porosity and other defects and whether or not acceptance standards are met.

Develop and enforce acceptance standards to prevent introduction of substandard materials that might be hazardous to mission fulfillment or would jeopardize human life.

Monitor projects related to the development of non-destructive testing methods to assure that the latest technological and scientific developments are evaluated and applied, as appropriate, to the quality assurance system and related inspection and test equipment.

Review technical data packages for adequacy of requirements for testing of materials and material specifications and provides appropriate comments.

Specify the type and amount of product testing for first article, acceptance, comparison and special tests.

Investigate failure reports and field complaints, analyze quality problems and prepare recommendations for corrective action.

Calculate and report estimates of the reliability and maintainability of items using the data developed from testing of the stockpile sample, surveillance inspection, critical components evaluation, malfunction investigation, production and acceptance testing, and from study of manufacturing processes.

Serve on special committees and technical working groups.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

Demonstrate ability to communicate proficiently in English both orally and in writing.

Ability to apply standard material testing practices, methods and techniques.

Analytical ability to define problems, collect necessary data and establish facts.

Proficient in the use of MS Office tools and applications.

Proficiency with relevant standards such as ASTM, AWS, ASME, and ANSI related to materials.

Experience & Education

Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering or other pertinent engineering or professional physical science field such as chemistry, physics or materials.

5 years experience performing failure and root cause analysis on a wide variety of materials, preferably related to combat and tactical vehicles.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

Normal office working environment in HVAC controlled facilities

Military facility located in semi-remote secure location

UAE is an arid desert environment

Facilities are combined office/workshop design

Travel

Requires daily travel to military facility which is approximately 40 miles each way.
