Review methodologies used in developing reliability predictions and test procedures in order to assess effectiveness.
Keeps abreast of the state of the art in the fields of reliability, maintainability and testing.
Review and evaluate data developed from tests in order to isolate problems in component design, material design, material characteristics and other factors.
Evaluate materials design, manufacturing processes and usage to determine root causes of failures and, based on findings, recommend changes in design, processing and limitation of usage.
Provide technical assistance to Prototyping and Fabrication Laboratory production teams on problems involving chemical composition, forging and heat treatment.
Perform mechanical testing, analyzes and appraises metallurgical aspects relative to malfunctions of vehicles and other weapons systems.
Furnish advice to Modeling, Simulation and Design Laboratory teams on problems requiring design changes which may affect product quality and reliability.
Review weapon system specifications and recommend reliability, maintainability and test specifications to be incorporated into procurement contracts.
Provide technical assistance to contracting officials on matters involving interpretation of specifications and drawings related to requirements of materials.
Evaluate contractors' technical competence.
Provide consulting services to quality assurance elements on matters concerning definition of criticality of cracks, inclusions, porosity and other defects and whether or not acceptance standards are met.
Develop and enforce acceptance standards to prevent introduction of substandard materials that might be hazardous to mission fulfillment or would jeopardize human life.
Monitor projects related to the development of non-destructive testing methods to assure that the latest technological and scientific developments are evaluated and applied, as appropriate, to the quality assurance system and related inspection and test equipment.
Review technical data packages for adequacy of requirements for testing of materials and material specifications and provides appropriate comments.
Specify the type and amount of product testing for first article, acceptance, comparison and special tests.
Investigate failure reports and field complaints, analyze quality problems and prepare recommendations for corrective action.
Calculate and report estimates of the reliability and maintainability of items using the data developed from testing of the stockpile sample, surveillance inspection, critical components evaluation, malfunction investigation, production and acceptance testing, and from study of manufacturing processes.
