The Opportunity

The College of Education (COE), one of the original colleges established at Zayed University, is deeply engaged in a movement to improve the government schools across the UAE. The COE is a candidate for accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in the US. This changing school environment provides a rare opportunity for the COE to become an even stronger leader in national school reform, beginning with the education of new teachers, and continuing to provide professional development for experienced teachers. In addition to offering a range of undergraduate teacher preparation programs, the COE offers four master’s level graduate programs as well as a variety of professional development certificates. This fall the COE will open a magnificent new Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) on the new, iconic ZU campus in Abu Dhabi. The ECLC will serve as both a lab school for ZU students and a center for research into learning by young children in a bilingual environment.

The Dean will have a unique opportunity to lead the development of the College of Education as it becomes even more engaged with the national school reform movement and in creating its new Graduate School of Education and Professional Development.

The Requirements: Doctoral degree from an accredited university in education or a related field. Qualifications for appointment at Associate or Full Professor rank. Five years experience in academic administration at the level of Department Chair or above, including at least two years as a Dean or Associate/Assistant Dean in a Western-type educational environment. Demonstrated success as a teacher and scholar in a recognized college or university. Experience in a learning outcomes based, assessment-rich, educational institution. Evidence of leadership in the development of new programs that meet international standards and success in building teamwork and a shared vision. Experience with international accreditation of a College of Education is essential with NCATE preferred. Ability to work with faculty from diverse cultures and nationalities and across disciplinary lines. Patience and tolerance for ambiguity and change. Experience in an international and/or a multilingual environment is preferred.
